Madeira's climate is subtropical and the weather is pleasant almost all year round. Temperatures are mild most of the time. There are few temperature differences between summer and winter: 17°C to 18°C on average in winter and 23°C to 24°C in summer. Due to the presence of the ocean, the temperatures never drop below 10 °C. In mountainous areas, rainfalls occur mainly between October and March, due to the passage of the Azores high. Madeira can be visited all year round: in summer to enjoy the sea, in spring to observe the flowers bloom. Autumn is also perfect for those who wish to attend the chestnut festival in Curral das Freiras at the end of October, a traditional and famous festival on the island, and enjoy a cultural stay. Madeira is therefore an ideal travel destination as it can be visited all year round. Even the months of November to February are interesting: November is known for mushrooms and chestnuts picking but also for certain activities such as downhill biking, a famous activity in Madeira. You will therefore see many races of this discipline, or even car rallies. You can still go to the beach at this time of year, the sun is often present and the water is still good. December and January are very popular months, especially for Christmas, when the very Catholic island is beautifully decorated, and many real-life nativity scenes are open to the public. In addition, the New Year's Eve fireworks displayed throughout Funchal Bay attracts many tourists. It should be noted that winter has the advantage allowing you to hike in the snow in the morning (even if the snow does not fall every year), and to bathe in the afternoon. In February, a Carnival parade, similar to the one in Rio, is organized on Funchal; each village has its own procession.
