When to go to Ethiopia?
The climate in Ethiopia changes a lot depending on the altitude. Certain parts of the country experience a rather cool climate, particularly in the mountainous regions, while in the lowlands you find an arid climate. Nevertheless, generally speaking, temperatures are rather moderate in the majority of the key places to visit.
In the north of the country in the high plateaus and around the capital, Addis-Abeba, the climate is quite temperate all year round. In fact, temperatures come close to around the 20°C mark in July/August and 25°C between March and May. In Lalibela, the thermometer consequently shows 19°C in the middle of January, at which time the Simien national park and the city of Gondar feature temperatures of 20°C. While the days are rather warm in this part of the country thanks to the rather mild climate, the nights are cooler, with temperatures being able to drop to 10°C. An initial, rather light rain season strikes from March, which then gets stronger from June to October.
In the south-west of the country, and especially in the Mago national park in the valley of Omo, the rain season hits forcefully as early as the month of March. It is therefore strongly recommended that you don’t head to this region during the rain season as the weather here is especially tropical – very hot and humid. Some of the country’s rather arid regions are also strongly discouraged as the heat here is unbearable. In the south-east, the semi-arid Somali regional state, for example, is extremely hot. Further north, near to the Afar region, the climate is sweltering all year round. It is right here that the impressive Danakil desert can be found, where temperatures can go up to 49°C! This part of the country should be avoided particularly from May to November.
The best time therefore to go to Ethiopia would be from October to March in order to avoid the rain season and more specifically the months of July and August, during which the rain is very intense. Temperatures all year round are between 20°C and 25°C with rather warm days and rather cool nights.
