Playa de los Gigantes, Santiago del Teide

Heading to the west of Tenerife, the village of Santiago del Tiede is where you will find Playa de los Gigantes, named after the 800 metre cliffs which plunge onto the beach. They offer swimmers a unique vista. The beach is covered in black volcanic sand, not uncommon in Tenerife, but surprising the first time you encounter it. Although the beach is fairly small, Playa de los Gigantes is relatively unknown and remains fairly quiet. Just off the beach is a group of restaurants and bars to help you make the most of this peaceful and authentic environment. Nearby, you can also book your maiden dive or an excursion to observe marine life.

The beach is easily accessible and has a large car park. Unusually for the south of the island, this well kept natural beach only has one restaurant.

Lucie's review

Tenerife is an ideal destination for a beach holiday in any season. With its endless springtime climate, it’s the perfect place to sunbathe on volcanic or golden sands. Having said that, the Atlantic Ocean baths these shores and the temperature of the water is not always high. Sometimes swimming is the preserve of the brave - one of the disadvantages of Tenerife. However, Tenerife’s beaches are a world away from anything closer to home with their black sand and scenery made ever more dramatic by the rocks and cliffs. The majority of beaches are well equipped and well used, especially during the school holidays. But here and there you can find hidden beaches with fewer visitors. A bonus of Tenerife’s beaches is the opportunity for water sports. The beaches are ideal for surfing, being far from the rocks, and with moderate waves much of the time. On the other hand, don’t forget your sun cream for those days on the beach. The UV index is particularly high in the Canary Islands and the frequently cloudy weather does not protect you from sunburn. In fact, it often catches out tourists. Of course, there are a multitude of equally beautiful beaches around the world, but Tenerife’s beaches have a faraway appeal which encourages you to discover their charms time and time again.
