Beaches in Menorca

The most beautiful beaches

plage Cala Macarella carte

Cala Macarella

This beach, located close to Cala Galdana is ranked as one of the most beautiful. A rugged bay surrounded by pine trees and shallow, transparent waters. It has everything you could want and is suitable for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling. Restaurants are hard to come by, so take a picnic. A ten minute walk from Cala Galdana will get you there. It’s a small price to pay and definitely worth the effort.

plage Cala Turqueta carte

Cala Turqueta

A beautiful crescent of sand which opens onto a rocky inlet of opalescent water. The beach has a gentle gradient, little wind and pine trees to relax in the shade. Cala Turqueta is the first of the wonderful beaches that are linked by a track you can take on foot, by bike or on horseback. After paying for parking, there is nothing but sand, water and greenery for miles. Plan to take everything you need for the day as there will be few occasions to buy food or anything else.

plage Macarelleta carte

Macarelleta

Macarella need not be envious of its neighbour, with its gently sloping beach and shallow waters. The beach is open to naturists. There are no cocktail bars or hat vendors here. This is open nature where you can swim in an oasis among the pines and white cliffs. Priceless.

plage Cala Galdana carte

Cala Galdana

One of the very few paved beaches on the island. Of interest mainly as the point of departure for the trail to the gems that are Cala Macarella, Cala Mitjana and Cala Turqueta. What Cala Galdana does have over those beaches is bars, restaurants and sun bed hire. You can also surf, kite-surf or paddle board there.

plage Cala Mitjana carte

Cala Mitjana

The most famous beach in Minorca has been voted the most beautiful beach in Spain by Géo magazine. Like its neighbouring beaches in the South, the water is incredibly clear and the sand is white. You can get here by car, by bike (10 minutes from Cala Galdana) or on foot (25 minutes). Relatively isolated, it forms part of a reserve for a variety of fauna. On condition that you don’t leave anything on site, you can take a picnic. The neighbouring Mitjaneta is also beautiful.

plage Binigaus carte

Binigaus

Close to the suburban area of Sant Tomas, this beach is similar to Cala Galdana. It is a large beach of sand and pebbles, close to large hotels with plenty of restaurants and activity nearby. The beach is more accessible than Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjaneta, for example, but it is certainly not as pretty as either of them.

plage Cala escorxada carte

Cala escorxada

A hidden gem that can only be reached after a walk of several hours from Binigaus. This tiny, isolated rocky inlet is encircled by majestic cliffs and is an ideal locale for snorkelling. You can also get here by boat from Cala Galdana, for example.

plage Son Saura carte

Son Saura

Neighbouring Cala Turqueta, this average sized white sand beach is about 5 miles from Ciutadella. It is patrolled and has a slight gradient, making it an ideal beach for children. Easy to get to with parking nearby, although access is via a narrow path.

plage Cala Pregonda carte

Cala Pregonda

The picture speaks for itself: an incredible contrast between the orange-red sands and the pure blue verging on white water. It is a large beach, typical of those in the north of Minorca and similar to those in the Basque Country. Wild and buffeted by winds, the beach attracts surfers. Large and unspoiled, this beach is difficult to access - a 20 minute walk from Binimel over a stony path, accounting for the relatively few visitors. But believe us, it is worth it. There are no restaurants or services of any kind, so take plenty of queso de Mao and sobrassada with you.

plage Arenal d’en castell carte

Arenal d’en castell

This large beach is said to be one of the most beautiful in the north of the island. Easy to get to and close to hotel complexes, you will find bars and restaurants there. It is very busy but its size means you won’t have any difficulty finding a place. As with all the beaches in the north, the wind can be strong so keep the swimming conditions in mind.

plage Cala Algaiarens carte

Cala Algaiarens

Situated in a conservation area in the heart of the Vall Mountains, the area comprises the beaches of Es Bots and Es Tancats. Fairly busy, the beach is easy to get to. The pearl grey sand and turquoise water contrast with the surrounding emerald vegetation. The beach slopes gently and is patrolled.

plage Cala pilar carte

Cala pilar

This truly superb sand and gravel beach is framed by red-ochre cliffs. Very isolated, it can be battered by strong winds and is therefore not suitable for swimming with children. What’s more, you have to walk for an hour along a barely shaded road to get there. Take good shoes and plenty of sun cream. You will be rewarded by the beauty of the location and the natural spring water which acts as the area’s cocktail bar.

plage Cala Cavalleria carte

Cala Cavalleria

Sublime scenery surrounds this beach. From the sea rise 80 metre cliffs along which you can walk and take in the panoramic views. The sand is golden and the water emerald green. The area is enjoyed by amateur sailors and naturists too.

plage Cala tortuga carte

Cala tortuga

This large cove of crystalline water forms the entrance to the S’Albufera d’Es Grau marine reserve. From here you can reach the Illa d’en Colom by kayak or paddle board. You also have choice of diving and other aquatic sports. This conservation area is a sanctuary for numerous species of migratory birds.
